Dancewear: Black Ballet Slippers
Black ballet slippers are mostly worn by male dancers. Men commonly wear white, as well. Most ballet shoes made for women are pink. Black and pink have always been the tradition for ballet when it comes to ballet slippers, dance leotards and tights. Many dance instructors across the world will not allow female dancers in class unless they are wearing black leotards and pink tights and shoes.
The standard dancewear for male ballet dancers includes black tights, a white T shirt and black ballet slippers. As mentioned before, there are also white slippers, generally made with canvas. Black slippers are made the same as other ballet shoes, and there are choices in the fabric, and between a full sole or split sole. Each dancer may have his or her own preference for choosing the style of shoes he or she wears for classes and rehearsals.
Children, who are just beginning ballet, can wear pink or black ballet slippers. Some of the smallest sizes are only available in black, depending on the manufacturer of the shoes. Some of the most popular manufacturers include Capezio, Danskin, Bloch, and Sansha.
Black Ballet Slippers for Theatre
Black slippers are often worn in theatre performances. For example, in musical theatre productions there is almost always a chorus of dancers and singers. It is common for the chorus to all wear black slippers to keep a uniformed look for both the men and women. Also, black slippers tend to draw less attention to the feet than pink, under bright lights.
